DESCRIPTION
Project Brief
Penn State had just hired a new basketball coach as well as a new director of marketing for their athletic department. They wanted the poster to convey a rededication to the team concept, setting aside the focus on a specific ballplayer. The poster also needed to be instantly recognizable as representing Penn State.
This was a tight deadline: I was asked to have final design in hand the following day.
Approach
A rough concept was provided to me of a basketball player driving to the hoop, and included the backboard and rim. I felt that the image would be stronger if the focus could be entirely on the player itself, so I moved in that direction eliminating everything but the player. The blue and white background reflect Penn State’s team colors, and the texture gives added visual interest. The angled horizontal black and white bands of color work with the player, creating the effect of motion from right to left. The basketball player is silhouetted
and nondescript, promoting the goal of “team-first.”
Outcome
Posters were distributed all over campus and the surrounding area. It was fun to see my work in the hands of students excited about the upcoming season.
