Project Brief
Penn State’s Nittany Lion Club wanted to create a calendar that celebrated the history of athletics at Penn State. It would need to give equal time to Penn State’s 29 varsity sports, and have all 12 months of the year be filled with facts and statistics: a trivia buff’s dream.
Approach
The first stage in my process was simply gathering photos and content. I was able to acquire current images from sports information and the Nittany Lion Club, and photos from the past from Penn State’s Pattee Library Photo Archives. Most images needed to be scanned in, so I spent a great deal of time at the library choosing images and scanning them in.
For written content, I was introduced to Penn State historian Lou Prato. Lou is a wealth of information, and I shared with him my thoughts of placing a different statistic or factoid on most days of each month. He was up to the task, and probably had enough information to fill a 10-year calendar.
My approach with the design was to try and keep the layout and placement of objects from page to page as consistent as possible to minimize any confusion and visual clutter that could easily occur from so much imagery and information being displayed. I felt that a singular dominant image would work best at the top of each page, again with the goal of giving the viewer a comfortable place to look first. The consistent sepia color scheme underscores the vintage quality of the piece as a whole and helps pull the many elements together.
Outcome
After months of planning, design, and production, the calendars were mailed out as a special gift to Nittany Lion Club members for the holiday season.
