The rookie kicker for the Carolina Panthers this past season was my cousin's son, Joey Slye. During training camp, Joey was promptly dubbed the “Swole” kicker by the quarterback, Cam Newton, due to his impressive physique.
Joey dedicates every one of his kicks to his older brother AJ, who passed away in early 2014 after battling Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), a rare form of blood cell cancer. Joey and his parents, Dave and Laura, are active in their fight against adult/childhood cancer through the SlyeStrong#6 Foundation, which they established in AJ's honor.
Our extended family had a blast following Joey's progress throughout the season. To top things off, my boys and I had the opportunity in November to travel to Charlotte and watch him play firsthand vs. the rival Atlanta Falcons. Keep Pounding!
